The best reef safe sunscreens to protect our oceans

Protecting our skin from the harsh UV rays of the sun is important. Almost all skin cancers are due to too much exposure to the sun’s UV radiation or to sunbeds or sunlamps.

Naturally, when we are vacationing at the beach, sunblock is an absolute essential, however, whilst sunscreen brands work for us, keeping us safe from harmful rays, they can be deadly for the planet’s delicate coral reefs. The use of traditional sunscreens can cause coral bleaching.

Chemicals soak into the water when we swim and are absorbed by the reefs. Even if we do not swim at the beach, aerosol sunscreens often spray excess onto the sand, which is later washed into the waves. Just showering after applying sunscreen will mean that these harmful chemicals are still getting back into the water.

The impact is so devastating that a Hawaii sunscreen ban has been implemented in the island state, to prevent the sale of damaging sunscreens. It can sometimes be easy to take our coral reefs for granted but these precious ecosystems provide protection for coasts from storms and waves and are habitats for a plethora of marine creatures.

Thankfully, reef safe sunscreen is available worldwide. These sunscreens work by using mineral-based ‘non-nano’ ingredients. This means their ingredient particles are bigger than those in standard chemical sunscreen which ensures that they are not absorbed by coral. Look for mineral sunscreens (these sit on the skin and form a barrier rather than being absorbed into the skin) that contain non-nano zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. To help protect both ourselves and our coral reefs, we have put together a list to help you choose the best reef safe sunscreen for you.
